In the earliest days of the universe, long before the gods came into existence or the planets evolved; even before the forming of the stars that guide Chinese and Western astrology were spun into being, there existed natural forces that would shape all that was to come and all that ever shall be.
Among these forces were Light and Chaos. In those early days gravity had not yet been created to repel them, so such powerful natural forces swirled and danced around one another until they collided in a fission of heat and energy. Their mating produced three daughters. The first was Joy, the second was Pain and the third was Love.
Chaos continued to swirl and speed through space and time, moving on to mate with many other forces in the universe. Among them was Darkness. Their mating begat another offspring, a son. The prodigy of Chaos and Darkness was Anger. It’s true that Darkness cares nothing for beauty or grace, and her offspring Anger watched from behind Darkness’ skirts and grew ever more jealous of the beauty of his half sisters as they frolicked under the careful watch of Light.
Anger’s sibling Envy encouraged this resentment until one day it boiled over. Anger kidnapped the youngest daughter Love and stole her away to a hidden fortress beyond the boundaries of space and time to a place we cannot see. And so it was that Love was absent from the Universe.
Alone in the darkness Love despaired. In her stress and fear Love cried out to her mother for aid. Such is the connection between mother and daughter, between Love and Light that Light heard her daughter’s lament even in that forbidden place beyond our knowing. Light flamed brightly, racing across the cosmos in a desperate search to find her daughter.
In time she saw through the veiled shadows and uncovered what Anger had done. Light called upon Chaos and said, “See what your son Anger has done! He has taken Love from this world!” Chaos turned against his son. He reached into Anger’s hidden fortress and smote him; rescuing Love and returning her into the waiting arms of Light.
Chaos prepared to punish Anger for his hurtful actions and banish him from existence forever. But his son cried out to him, begging for mercy and forgiveness. Anger repented his horrid acts to his father, and ever true to his nature Chaos relented.
Anger found forgiveness and was allowed to remain in the universe, and remains hidden under the hem of Darkness skirt even today. But from that moment on, Love has mistrusted Anger; and Anger still leerily stalks Love. And sometimes you will find Chaos in the aid of Love and sometimes helping Anger. But through it all, Love will always be watched over by Light.
