A long time ago, before humans roamed the earth but after the gods fled to the heavens Sky loved Sea and Sea alone. This was good because Sea loved Sky and Sky alone.
Their love formed at the dawn of creation itself and as is the way with such things their habits, preferences and even appearance began to resemble one another over time. Sky was so enamored that it immersed itself completely in the depth of Sea. Sea was so taken with Sky that whomever gazed upon Sea would see only the reflection of Sky.
Oftentimes at twilight Sea whispered longingly to Sky, “I love you”. At this Sky blushed first pale pink, then bright scarlet, and finally a deep crimson. Startled and delighted at the response, Sea glowed the same brilliant colours of Sky. They would slowly come together, drawing down the veiling privacy of darkness and embrace lovingly until you could no longer tell where one ended and the other began.
However one day it happened that there came into being Cloud. Cloud also fell in love with Sky, who was so cool, soothing and vast, with so many alluring shades of blue. The true blue of nobility, the crepuscule blue of twilight, the bright translucent blue of loneliness. The innumerable hues beckoned Cloud to gaze upon Sky and grow desirous. Being young and new to the ways of love, Cloud attempted every way to win the fancy of Sky. But despite Cloud’s playful attempts at forming shapes in attempts to win Sky’s affection, Sky continued to look at none other than Sea and Sea alone.
Cloud’s unrequited passion and impotent efforts led to Cloud becoming enraged. In anger and resentment Cloud eclipsed the whole of the horizon, severing the connection between Sea and Sky. Unable to feel a connection with Sea any more, Sky was grief-struck and fell into sorrow. For endless days tears tricked down from Sky and cast the whole of the earth watery and blurry.
Sea tossed and turned in grief and dismay at the disappearance of Sky. Sea could find no peace or rest and boiled with yearning, attempting to reach up to Cloud with thunderous waves, gigantic tides and spumes of spray. Despite all of Sea’s power Cloud remained unmoved, untouched and uncaring to the plight of Sea’s longing for beloved Sky.
Eventually the woeful tale of Sea and Sky’s longing was passed on to Wind. Wind took great pity upon Sea and Sky. Wind graciously intervened and blew Cloud away, returning the eternally grateful Sea and Sky to their joyful union.
Thus with the help of Wind Cloud is driven across Sky, never fully able to claim all of something so vast. In its sorrow Cloud sprinkled tears upon the ground and even today is the reason why clouds turn to rain, winds bring change and blow tears away, and we all look towards the horizon of the future where the sea and sky meet in a lovers embrace, intertwined at the edge of the world for all of our days.
